Ben Smith’s Doggerland was a Guardian Book of the Year on its publication in 2019, earning praise from seemingly everyone who read it. Will it impress me as much as it did them? You Wouldn’t Want to Live There

Setting is all important in fantasy and science fiction, with so many novels and series featuring such comforting locations that you wish you could just step into them. But what of those less salubrious locations? Those places with the sticky-floored clubs, the casual (or even serious) violence? Here are five unpleasant locations from great books!… Read More You Wouldn’t Want to Live There

Mystery Blogger Award

I was nominated by Rin over at The Thirteenth Shelf, a truly excellent human being with a blog to match! A big thank you to her for tagging me, and asking some really fun questions, and to Okoto Oke Enigma for creating this award in the first place.

This #bookhaul is not entirely the result of a single trip, this is just everything I've bought since my last haul picture (probably on Twitter). I blame @thevoiceofboo for The Virgin Suicides, as she made it sound amazing. I can't remember who to blame for The Infinite and the Divine, but I know I was talking to someone about it - speak up if you think it was you!
A few holiday snaps! First pic - the dogs impatiently waiting in their cage to be allowed to explore their temporary home. Second pic - the ruined abbey at Dunwich as the sun sets. Third pic - my sister's dog Hudson looks mournfully on the empty breakfast plate that wasn't for him.
Easily the biggest book haul I've ever had! This is the result of a spending spree with a birthday book token. The bag was really heavy.
Just received this extremely cool set of bookends as a surprise gift! You can expect to see these in all my stack photos from now on, I absolutely love them!
My most recent read, finished last night. There's a lot of bioengineered food for thought in this one!
A helpful reminder that just because you can do something, that doesn't mean you should. Like taking pretty photos of a book lying in snow, for example. Thankfully, the book is OK, after I brushed off a lot of the clingy white stuff!
January's physical read books! It's been a great reading month for me, with a couple of ARC eBooks thrown in for good measure too (Rebecca Roanhorse's Black Sun and Stephen Deas' The Moonsteel Crown).
A couple of days in Wales - not in the happiest circumstances, sadly - but some beautiful views around here.
I don't even care that this won't fit alongside any of my other books, it's such a cool design! This month's #bookclub pick, courtesy of @jessicarose.1995, can't wait to get started on this one.
I actually won a competition! Courtesy of @rebellionpublishing, this arrived today, can't wait to read it!
UK giveaway!
Never happier than when he's got a snack #dogsofinstagram #dog #kingcharlescavalier #spanielsofinstagram #spaniel
